I’ve got an ‘04 Miata and the fawncy canvas top is shot; it has torn along the top edge of the window. I know about the tops that are advertised for the NB. But I used to have a ‘93 NA, which had a plastic top with an unzippable plastic rear window.
While the glass window in the NB tops is definitely easier to see through, I preferred the plastic window top because a.) it’s lighter, b.) it’s cheaper, and c.) you could unzip it and drive around with the back window open, which is nice in the rain and also nice in our unspeakable six-month Florida summers, where driving with the top down exposes you to sunburn and heat stroke.
So my question is, does anyone know if you can put an NA top on the NB frame?

Dunno about that, but I’d say spend the money to get the correct top, especially if you’re going to keep the car and not sell it. The extra money will pay off over time.

Putting an NA top on an NB, not so sure about, but Robbins makes an NB replacement top with a zippered glass window (click the link and scroll down to part # 2962).

A glass top you can unzip sounds like the best of both alternatives. Especially now that the local police departments have patrol cars that aren’t easy-to-spot Crown Vics. Thanks!

Should be possible as putting an NB top on to an NA is a common swap. But if you don’t have a used one on hand I would probably grab the NB top with the zippered glass window as AtlasM suggested.

So here is how it goes. Yes you can swap in a NA top into a NB but the frames are different. They do make plastic window top for the NB frame. But I will say this. DON’T DO IT. Get the glass. Especially down south the plastic goes fast and you end up with having to replace the top again over a crappy plastic window. I daily drive my 2001 and its had glass. Sure its lighter by maybe 5 lbs. But the longevity of the top with the glass will pay for itself. I have seen many 2-3 year old plastic windows just crack one day. Glass should not do that.
So in the end. You can get a plastic window top of the NB frame. If you order a NA top it will not fit on the NB frame.
